An optical assembly 100 has a first lens holder 102 with a collar 108 having an internal flange 110 forming a spring seat 112. A biasing element 106 and variable focus optical element 107 are positioned within the chamber of the second lens holder. The collar of the first lens holder may have threads 129 that engage threads 130 of the collar of the second lens holder. The threads of the first lens holder may by internal and the threads of the second lens holder may be external. Another optical assembly is different to this optical assembly in that the first/second lens holder have internal/external threads that engage one another without collars that couple together.
