A method of providing a methionine restriction benefit to a subject without restricting the subject's diet is provided. The method includes administering an effective amount of a pharmaceutical composition to the subject. The pharmaceutical composition includes one or more of a first compound and a selenium compound. The first compound includes at least one compound chosen from lysine, O-benzyl serine (OBS), S-phenyl cysteine (SPC), S-benzyl cysteine (SBC), isoleucine, taurine, tryptophan, and 2-aminobicyclo-(2.2.1)-heptane-2-carboxylic acid (BCH). The second compound includes at least one compound chosen from selenomethionine, selenohomocysteine, selenocystathionine, selenocysteine/selenocystine, selenoglutathione trisulfide, methaneselenol, dimethyl selenide, trimethyl selenide, purified selenomethionine, selenized yeast extract, and pharmaceutically-acceptable salts of selenium-based acids.
