The present invention relates to a method for testing the functioning of a pressure generator assembly ( 12 , 14 ) of an electronic slip-controlled external force braking system ( 10 ) with redundant braking pressure generating function, particularly for autonomous vehicles. In an autonomous vehicle, the external force braking system 10 is provided with an extra pressure supply for safety reasons. The external force braking system has a main pressure generator assembly 12 and a sub pressure generator assembly 14 , the sub pressure generator assembly 14 being activated only when the main pressure generator assembly 12 is faulty. It is therefore necessary to periodically check the functioning of the sub-pressure generator assembly 14 . The present invention proposes a method related thereto. What these methods have in common is that the main pressure generator assembly 12 and the sub pressure generator assembly 14 are hydraulically connected in parallel to each other to the brake circuit 64a,b to which the wheel brakes 66a-d are connected. The wheel brakes 66a-d are disconnected from the brake circuits 64a,b during the course of the method. To apply pressure to the brake circuit 64a,b, one or more pressure generators 52 of the main pressure generator assembly 12 or pressure generators 86a,b of the sub pressure generator assembly 14 are actuated.
