A method and system for theft detection for a vehicle is provided. The method comprises providing a telematics module, a body control module and an engine control module, which are arranged in the vehicle and have components and at least one theft-detected state. The body control module communicates with the telematics module and the engine control module. The telematics module is also in communication with a backend server, which is located away from the vehicle. The method also includes recording at least one event by the body control module,which defines a theft flag. The method also includes detecting the deactivation of the telematics module by the body control module or the backend server. The method further includes activating the at least one theft-detected state of the vehicle when the theft flag and deactivating the telematics module are detected.
