This edge crack detection apparatus is for detecting edge cracks in a metal plate being conveyed, the edge crack detection apparatus being provided with a detection unit that includes a plurality of elements arrayed along the plate width direction of the metal plate. The plurality of elements are each configured to be able to detect the presence or absence of the metal plate at the position of the element in the plate width direction. The apparatus is also provided with: a plate end position identification unit that is configured to identify a plate end position of the metal plate in the plate width direction on the basis of the results of the detection by a plurality of first elements, among the plurality of elements, positioned in a first region in the plate width direction; and an edge crack detection unit that is configured to detect an edge crack in the metal plate on the basis of the results of the detection by a plurality of second elements which are selected from among the plurality of elements on the basis of the plate end position and which are positioned in a second region which is narrower than the first region in the plate width direction.
