A hinge mechanism (30) for a roof or window (1) for a recreational vehicle (100) such as a motorhome, caravan or minibus, in which the hinge mechanism (30) comprises:a first fastener (32) and a second fastener (34), wherein the first fastener (32) is configured to be attached to a frame (20) of the roof or window (1), and the second fastener (34) is configured, to be attached to a cover plate (10) of the roof or window (1),wherein the hinge mechanism (30) further comprises a first coupling arm (36) and a second coupling arm (38),wherein the first coupling arm (36) has a first longitudinal end portion, a second longitudinal end portion and an intermediate portion connecting the first longitudinal end portion of the first coupling arm (36) to the second longitudinal end portion of the first coupling arm (36), the first longitudinal end section of the first coupling arm (36) is pivotally coupled to the first fastener (32) to pivot by a first pivot axis (PA1),and the second longitudinal end portion of the first coupling arm (36) is pivotally coupled to the second fastener (34) to pivot by a second pivot axis (PA2);and the second coupling arm (38) has a first longitudinal end portion, a second longitudinal end portion and an intermediate portion connecting the first longitudinal end portion of the second coupling arm (38) to the second longitudinal end portion of the second coupling arm (38), wherein the first longitudinal end portion of the second coupling arm (38) is pivotally coupled to the second fastening element (34) to pivot by a third pivotal axis (PA3), and the second longitudinal end portion of the second coupling arm (38) pivotally coupled to the first fastening element (32), to pivot by a fourth pivot axis (PA4),wherein the intermediate portion of the first coupling arm (36) is pivotally coupled to the intermediate portion of the second coupling arm (38) to pivot by a fifth pivot axis (PA5),where the first to fifth pivot axes (PA1, PA2, PA3, PA4, PA5) are aligned parallel to each other,wherein the first coupling arm (36) is coupled to one of the first fastening element (32) and the second fastening element (34) in such a way that the corresponding first orsecond pivot axis (PA1, PA2) is movable along one of the first coupling arm (36) and the corresponding fastener (32, 34); andwherein the second coupling arm (38) with the other of the first fastener (32), andthe second fastener (34) is coupled in such a way that the corresponding third orfourth pivot axis (PA3, PA4) is movable along one of the second coupling arm (36) and the corresponding fastening element (32, 34)characterized by:the two coupling arms (36, 38) are provided between the fasteners (32, 34) and the two coupling arms (36, 38) cross, seen along a direction perpendicular to the pivot axes (PA1, PA2, PA3, PA4, PA5) so that the hinge mechanism (60) has a first operating state, where the first pivot axis (PA1) corresponds to the third pivot axis (PA3) and the second pivot axis (PA2) corresponds to the fourth pivot axis (PA4); andhas a second operating state in which none of the first to fifth pivot axes (PA1, PA2, PA3, PA4, PA5) corresponds to one of the other of the first to fifth pivot axes (PA1, PA2, PA3, PA4, PA5).
