The invention relates to a severe weather early warning method. An electrical charge of at least one rotor blade (200) of a wind turbine (100) is detected. The detected electrostatic charge or a parameter derived from the electrostatic charge is compared with a threshold value. A warning signal is generated if the threshold value is exceeded. This allows a severe weather early warning method to be provided without requiring external data. In other words, for the severe weather early warning method only data that can be collected within the wind turbine are analyzed.
