The present invention relates to the use of polylactide (PLA) as an extruded polymeric coating on paper or board intended for the manufacture of containers and packages that are heated in a stove or microwave oven. According to the present invention, a polyfunctional crosslinking agent such as trialkyl isocyanurate (TAIC) is mixed with PLA and the extruded coating layer is subjected to crosslinking electron beam (EB) irradiation. PLA can be used as is or mixed with another biodegradable polyester, such as polybutylene succinate (PBS). EB irradiation has been found to improve adhesion of coatings to paper or board substrates, heat sealability of coatings, and heat resistance of finished containers and packages.
