Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communication are described. A user equipment (UE) may identify a baseline physical downlink control channel (PDCCH) monitoring capability of the UE and an enhanced PDCCH monitoring capability of the UE, wherein the enhanced PDCCH monitoring capability is higher than the baseline PDCCH monitoring capability per slot. Facilitates monitoring by the UE of more PDCCH monitoring opportunities. The UE may report the enhanced PDCCH monitoring capability and also the baseline PDCCH monitoring capability to the base station. The UE may receive, based on the UE reporting the enhanced PDCCH monitoring capability, at least one control resource set configuration comprising an indication that the corresponding control resource set is configured for enhanced PDCCH monitoring. The UE may monitor a corresponding set of control resources according to the enhanced PDCCH monitoring capability of the UE.
