Techniques for simulating and optimizing the fabrication and design of physical devices are disclosed. The technique includes executing a fabrication simulation of a physical device using a fabrication model, the fabrication model receiving fabrication specifications as input and outputting a structural design for the physical device in response to the fabrication simulation. The behavioral simulation of the physical device is run using a design model that simulates the field response propagating through the simulated environment of the physical device. The structural design output from the fabrication model is cascaded forward to the design model and the output from the backpropagation of loss-of-performance errors through the design model is cascaded backwards to the fabrication model.
