Digital image retrieval is improved by utilizing word vectors for keywords in a keyword search query according to semantic digital image retrieval approach. With the semantic image retrieval approach, digital images can be identified as semantically related to a keyword search query even if the digital images are not indexed by or tagged by the search terms of the query. In one approach, a word vector for a keyword in a search query is projected into a matrix representing a corpus of digital images and image content categories to which the digital images belong where the projection is accomplished using another matrix of word vectors for keyword labels associated with the image content categories.
