The system and method for improving detection of a return signal in an optical ranging and detecting system (LIDAR).The system includes the following steps in the lidar system.That is, the lidar system encodes and transmits the sequence of pulses based on the user signature.Then, a plurality of return signals are received based on the reflection from the object of the sequence of pulses.The plurality of return signals can be decoded based on user signature and authenticated via correlation calculation.The user signature determines the amplitude of the first pulse in the sequence of pulses, the amplitude of the second pulse in the sequence of pulses, and the spacing between the first and second pulses.The bit representation of the user signature is orthogonal to the other bit signature of other lidar systems.The user signature can be dynamically changed by the lidar system.Selection diagram
