To provide pharmaceutical compositions for stimulating bacterial growth in gastrointestinal tracts of mammalian subjects.SOLUTION: Provided is a prebiotic composition comprising an effective amount of a purified human milk oligosaccharide for stimulating the growth of commensal bacteria endogenous to the intestine of a mammalian subject, where the oligosaccharide comprises purified 2'-fucosyllactose (2'-FL), purified 3-fucosyllactose (3-FL) or purified lactodifucotetraose (LDFT).SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
