To provide an improved machine tool capable of realizing work operation of two different types.SOLUTION: A machine tool 1 includes: a housing 2; a motor 4 for rotating a tool shaft 5 about its rotational axis 6; and a backing pad 3 for attaching a sanding or polishing element thereto, and capable of being eccentrically attached to a tool shaft by using an eccentric element 11 to enable execution of work operation by the backing pad. The housing is provided with a plurality of first magnetic elements 16 facing the backing pad. The backing pad attached to the eccentric element includes a plurality of second magnetic elements facing the housing. The machine tool realizes work operation of a first type if magnetic force is active at least partially between the first magnetic elements and the second magnetic elements, and realizes work operation of a second type if magnetic force is not active between the first magnetic elements and the second magnetic elements.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
