Disclosed herein are methods and compositions for treating or inhibiting disorders resulting from a C9orf72 mutation, comprising both neurodegenerative disorders and autoimmune diseases. In some embodiments, the methods and compositions comprise administering an agent that alters the gut microbiome of an individual having a C9orf72 mutation, and further, a method of screening test agents to identify candidate agents for treating or reducing the likelihood of a disease or condition associated with loss of function of C9orf72 in a subject.
