The invention concerns a device and a method for freezing a sample (1). The device shall have one sample container (2),is equipped to take a sample (1) of a liquid to be determined; a refrigerating appliance (5),which is equipped to cool the sample (1) in the sample container (2) without freezing; an electrode (12),where a first end section (14) is immersed in the test sample (1); an anti-electrode (13),which has a second end section assigned to the first end section (14); and a voltage device (11),which is connected to the electrode (12) and the counter-electrode (13) and is equipped to provide anti-polar stresses to the electrode (12) and to the counter-electrode (13), with the voltage device (11) switched on by means of a arc to trigger a freezing process in the freeze-free chilled test sample (1), to form the arc between the first end section (14) of the electrode (12) and the second end section (18) of the counter-electrode (13). In addition, a freezing point osmometer and a method for the osmometric determination of a sample have been developed.
