PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an input device providing an efficient input system having a simple and easy-to-use configuration. An input device for operating a medical observation system, the device having a pointing device located on the surface of an interface, hardware buttons in a remote area, and compatible software buttons. It has a touch display panel that includes a graphical user interface. The hardware and software buttons have specific functions such as control of the pointing device and are arranged around and adjacent to the pointing device. This configuration is useful for operating the input device simultaneously and with one hand without substantially immersing the operator's concentration in the input device itself.
