According to one aspect of the invention, there is provided a system for monitoring vessel part operation, the system comprising: a signal acquisition module to receive a plurality of data streams, each data stream being from a sensor monitoring performance of a vessel part; a data processing and analysis module coupled to the signal acquisition module, the data processing and analysis module configured to: analyse metrics extracted from the plurality of data streams for violation of one or more applicable rules, each rule establishing a threshold range for anomaly free performance of the monitored vessel part providing the analysed metric; and trigger an alert event providing details of the violated rules, in response to detection of violation of one or more of the rules; and a library storing rules establishing threshold ranges for anomaly free performance of vessel parts under different vessel operation conditions, to which the data processing and analysis module interrogates to obtain the one or more applicable rules.
