Disclosed are a camera system to which a complementary pixellet structure is applied and a method of operating the same. According to an embodiment, the camera system includes an image sensor including at least one pixel block, wherein the at least one pixel block includes a plurality of pixel groups having different color channels, each of the plurality of pixel groups comprising: a plurality of pixels using the same color filter, wherein each of the plurality of pixels included in at least one pixel group among the plurality of pixel groups includes pixels, the pixels transmitting an optical signal containing a photodiode that converts it into an electrical signal; and receiving images obtained from pixels disposed at positions symmetrical to each other with respect to a pixel center of each of the plurality of pixels from among the pixels of each of the plurality of pixels included in the at least one pixel group, the image and a distance calculator for calculating a distance between the image sensor and the subject by using a parallax between them.
