Systems ( 100 ) and methods ( 1000 ) are disclosed for additive manufacturing or repairing a component from a base material ( 10 ). The system may include a laser metal deposition (LMD) system 200 for cooling a base material during laser processing of deposited materials in a molten pool on the base material. operatively connected to means 300 . The LMD system includes a laser energy source 202 that is configured to form a molten pool on the base material and to process the deposited stacked materials to form layers on the base material upon solidification. For this purpose, it is configured to direct laser energy towards the base material. The means for cooling may be configured to cool the base material during the LMD process, for example, to within a cooling temperature range causing a cooling/freezing effect. This cooling effect shortens the solidification period during laser processing and enables the welding heat to be dissipated from the base material.
