A method (400) is proposed, carried out by means of a decoder (260, 600, 701) for decoding a bit stream containing a set of image parameters (PPS) and the first set of slices. The method includes: obtaining (s402) a set of image parameters, decoding (s404) a syntactic element included in the set of image parameters to obtain the indicator value. The decoder has such a configuration that if the indicator value is set equal to the first value, the decoder determines that the image header included in the bit stream contains a parameter value corresponding to a specific parameter, otherwise the decoder determines that each slice included in the first set of slices contains a parameter value corresponding to a specific parameter.
