The present invention relates to the field of MRI contrast agents, and provides an MRI contrast agent, a preparation method therefor and an application thereof. The MRI contrast agent is prepared by a compound having structural features of formula I. The MRI contrast agent can also be prepared by a compound having structural features of formula II or pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof, wherein M1 is a +2 valent ion of paramagnetic metal Mn, Fe, Eu or Dy, or a +3 valent ion of Mn, Fe, Eu or Dy; M2 is Na+, K+, or a meglumine cation; when M1 is a +2 valent ion, a=2; and when M1 is a +3 valent ion, a=3. The MRI contrast agent is good in water solubility, high in relaxation efficiency, and low in toxic and side effects.
