FACIAL EXPRESSION RECOGNITION DEVICE AND FACIAL EXPRESSION RECOGNITION METHOD

A face detection unit (11) detects, from a captured image, a face region and various parts of the face of a subject. A characteristic extraction unit (12) extracts characteristic amounts for respective mimetic muscles on the basis of the face region and the various parts of the face as detected by the face detection unit (11). A mimetic muscle identification unit (13) identifies whether or not each mimetic muscle is moving by comparing the characteristic amount for each mimetic muscle, as extracted by the characteristic extraction unit (12), with pieces of identification data (15). A facial expression recognition unit (14) recognizes the facial expression of the subject on the basis of a combination of mimetic muscles identified by the mimetic muscle identification unit (13) as moving. A calibration unit (16) calibrates the pieces of identification data (15) by using pieces of calibration data (17) which are the characteristic amounts for the respective mimetic muscles when the subject has a reference facial expression.
