A stainless steel for metal foils, said stainless steel having excellent surface properties and containing, in mass%, from 0.0001% to 0.15% of C, from 0.30% to 2.0% of Si, from 0.1% to 15% of Mn, 0.040% or less of P, from 5% to 30% of Ni, from 0.0001% to 0.01% of S, from 16% to 25% of Cr, 5% or less of Mo, 0.005% or less of Al, 0.0030% or less of Ca, 0.0010% or less of Mg, from 0.0010% to 0.0060% of O and from 0.0001% to 0.5% of N, with the balance being made up of Fe and unavoidable impurities, while containing inclusions that have a maximum circle-equivalent diameter of 5 μm or more at a density of 0.5/mm2 at a thickness of from 0.010 mm to 0.2 mm; a stainless steel foil; a method for producing a stainless steel for metal foils; and a method for producing a stainless steel foil.
