A METHOD FOR SELECTION OF AGENTS INFLUENCING INTESTINAL MOTILITY DISORDERS AND PAIN

Methods are provided for evaluating agents for the treatment of different intestinal motility disorders, using the distinct methodological portions of the muscular system and nerves of the GI tract that communicate with the brain. In particular, the present invention provides a method for the selection of an agent effective for the treatment of intestinal motility disorders, wherein the method comprises: a) spatiotemporal (ST) mapping performed in the gastrointestinal segment to analyze the effect of said agent on gastrointestinal motility; and b) ex vivo nerve bundle recording performed in the gastrointestinal segment to analyze the effect of said agent on mesenteric afferent neural firing. Also provided are bacterial strains selected by the method of the invention and the use of the bacterial strains in the treatment of intestinal motility disorders.
