The present invention relates to a method for providing exercise information of a user using a GPS receiver and to a mobile terminal for the same. monitoring whether the device is mounted; converting to a healthcare mode when the external GPS receiver is created as a result of the monitoring; periodically receiving positioning information of the mobile terminal through the mounted GPS receiver; and calculating and displaying on the screen movement information including the movement speed, movement distance, and amount of heat consumed according to the movement of the mobile terminal based on the periodically received positioning information. Since the present invention calculates the user's exercise information by using an external GPS receiver, the present invention can be applied to most of the mobile terminals currently distributed regardless of the specification information of the mobile terminal.
