Methods and apparatus are provided for decoding received uplink transmissions using log-likely rate optimization. In one embodiment, the method includes soft demapping of resource elements based on a soft demapping parameter as part of a process for generating a log-likely ratio (LLR) value, decoding the LLR to produce decoded data. and identifying a target performance value. The method also includes performing a machine learning algorithm that determines a performance metric from the decoded data and dynamically adjusts the soft demapping parameters to move the performance metric to a target performance value.
