The transmission of a recessive bit in a CAN message from a transmitting electronic control unit (ECU) is recognized via a controller area network. After a delay time, a dominant pulse is injected into the network in the recognized recessive bit. The behavior of the transmitted ECU is recognized and a sampling point for the transmitting ECU is characterized on the basis of the recognized ECU behavior. An action signal is then generated as a function of the characterized sampling point.
