The invention concerns a process for cooling a mechanical friction brake (8) of a hydrostatic-mechanical power transmission (1) with a hydrostatic power branch (2) and a mechanical power branch (3),recording hydraulic pressure in the hydrostatic power branch (2) (20),where from the recorded hydraulic pressure a power transmitted by the hydrostatic power branch (2) is determined (21).The inventive procedure is characterized by the time duration of a braking process by means of the friction brake (8) (22),the measured duration and the power transmitted by the hydrostatic power branch (2) determine the brake energy delivered (23) and the friction brake (8) is cooled according to the brake energy delivered (24).The invention continues to concern a corresponding hydrostatic-mechanical power distribution gearbox and a corresponding machine.
