The present invention provides a size-selective porous polymer for sorbing protein molecules from blood, said polymer comprising a plurality of pores, said pores sorbing protein molecules equal to or less than 50,000 Daltons, wherein said polymer is made hemocompatible by one of the following a) or b): a) surface grafting of the hemocompatible exterior coatings concomitantly with formation of the porous polymer beads. b) surface grafting of the hemocompatible exterior coatings onto the preformed porous polymeric beads.
