The activated lactose syrup is then isomerized by heating the lactose syrup up and holding the heated lactose syrup at an isomerization temperature to obtain a lactose/lactulose syrup, wherein during the heating up and/or during the holding at the isomerization temperature water is added to the lactose syrup to support the isomerization process. Finally, the lactulose is separated from the remaining lactose in the obtained lactose/lactulose syrup and/or the lactulose is purified.
