A device for the detection of a rocker arm angle of a coal mining machine on the basis of optical fiber sensing, the device comprising an optical system and a mechanical system, wherein the optical system comprises a broadband light source (1), a polarizer (2), collimating lenses (3, 5), a gradient specific rotation dielectric slab (4), a polarization beam splitter (6) and a data processing module (7); and the mechanical system comprises a connecting base (8), connecting rods (9, 10), a slide block (11), a bracket (12), a sensor housing (13), etc. When the coal mining machine works, a rocker arm (14) changes rotation angle information into the linear displacement of a gradient refractive index by means of a connecting rod mechanism; there is a change in the position at which linearly polarized light generated by the optical system penetrates the gradient specific rotation dielectric slab; and due to an optical rotation effect, the rotation angles of the polarization plane obtained by means of the gradient specific rotation dielectric slab are correspondingly different, and according to the phase angle of the detected polarized light, the swing angle of the rocker arm (14) can thus be obtained. A method for the detection of a rocker arm angle of a coal mining machine on the basis of optical fiber sensing is further disclosed. The present invention has the advantages of a simple structure, a strong anti-electromagnetic interference capability, high precision, intrinsic explosion suppression, etc.
