A system and method for supporting intra-subnet and inter-subnet address resolution in a network environment using the same linear forwarding table (LFT) for both intra-subnet and inter-subnet transfers. The subnet prefix value in the global route header (GRH) is used for linear forwarding table (LFT) lookups in high performance computing environments. An example provides the use of an inter-subnet route number (ISRN) embedded in a subnet prefix value in GRH for LFT search in a network switch environment in a high performance computing environment such as a network having an InfiniBand (IB) architecture can do. One method can provide one or more subnets each associated with one or more network switches or hosts in a computing environment including a network fabric. This system and method is compatible with legacy switches and nodes that are not familiar with ISRN.
