A system and method for supporting intra-subnet and inter-subnet address resolution in a network environment using the same linear forwarding table (LFT) for both intra-subnet and inter-subnet transfers. An example provides the use of an inter-subnet route number (ISRN) embedded in a subnet prefix value in GRH for LFT search in a network switch environment in a high performance computing environment such as a network having an InfiniBand (IB) architecture can do.
