Cost optimized aggregator based communication topology for point to multipoint networks

Optical combiner for communication networks that transmit both upstream and downstream optical signals. The communication network comprises an array of amplifiers, each of which receives a respective downstream optical signal. The output of each amplifier is split between multiple of the ports in the first splitter / combiner unit. The first splitter / combiner unit transmits the amplified downstream optical signal to the respective second splitter / combiner unit.
