Methods for depositing coatings and layered structures are provided. The coating is deposited on the substrate to produce a layered structure, thereby forming an interface between the coating and the substrate. The coating comprises silicon, oxygen, and carbon, wherein the carbon doping in the coating increases between the interface and the top surface of the coating. The top surface of the coating is hydrophobic and icephobic in nature and reduces wetting of the water or ice film on the layered structure without requiring reapplication of the coating.
