A system and method for generating high resolution images using a plenoptic camera having a main lens in front of an image sensor and an array of micro lenses, comprising: first using a birefringent medium disposed between the main lens and the array of micro lenses; capturing a first set of images in an unexcited operating state, wherein the birefringent medium in the unexcited state provides a normal ray to each pixel; causing the first unexcited state to become a second excited state by applying a voltage across the birefringent medium; capturing a second set of images in the second excited state, wherein the birefringent medium in the excited state separates light from the main lens into a normal ray and an extraordinary ray, the extraordinary ray being a normal ray on the image sensor shifted by 1/2 pixel distance from -; subtracting a pixel value associated with the first set of images from at least twice a pixel value associated with the second set of images; and generating a final set of images having a high resolution from the subtraction and the first set of images.
