To provide a method for treating a vessel such as a vein using phototherapy to strengthen and/or stiffen the outer surface of the vessel and improve the patency of the vessel.SOLUTION: The method comprises cleaning the outer surface of a vessel such as a vein, then brushing or coating it with a photoactive cross-linker, and irradiating it with light for cross-linking, thereby strengthening the outer surface of the vessel and improving the patency of the vessel.
