Formulations for safe and effective topical delivery of buffers are provided herein. The present invention includes formulations and methods for balancing electrolytes, overcoming cationic overload, and/or delivering buffers with or without counter ions that can be combined in single use formulations or alternatively into individually applied formulations. Also provided are methods of using the formulation for the treatment of various disorders associated with electrolyte imbalance, cation overload, or related diseases.
