A method, system, and device are described for coordinating a wide area network (WAN) hopping scheme and a device-to-device (D2D) hopping scheme. In an aspect, a method may include, by a base station, identifying a WAN frequency hopping scheme. The base station may coordinate the identified WAN frequency hopping scheme and the D2D frequency hopping scheme for the D2D capable user equipment (UE), and forward the D2D frequency hopping scheme to the D2D capable UE. In an aspect, the D2D frequency hopping pattern may be applied to retransmission between two D2D capable UEs. Another method may include, by the D2D capable UE, receiving a D2D frequency hopping scheme from a base station, wherein the D2D frequency hopping scheme is coordinated with a WAN frequency hopping scheme. The D2D capable UE may transmit at least one message to the second D2D capable UE according to the D2D frequency hopping scheme.
