An ultrasonic instrument system comprising a console 230 and a tip 142 having a distal end that vibrates both longitudinally and torsionally when vibrated. The console applies a drive signal at the longitudinal machine cancellation frequency to the drive 36 that vibrates the chip. As a result, when the tip is vibrated, at the distal end, the longitudinal component of the first resonant mode of the tip cancels the longitudinal component of the second resonant motion of the tip, and hence the distal end of the tip.
