PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a virtual personal assistant who responds with emotion. A virtual private assistant (VPA) is configured to analyze various types of inputs that indicate one or more behaviors associated with a user and identify the user's emotional state based on the inputs. The VPA also determines one or more actions to be performed on behalf of the user based on the input and the identified emotional state. The VPA then performs one or more actions and synthesizes the output based on the user's emotional state and the one or more actions. The combined output includes one or more semantic elements and one or more emotional elements derived from the user's emotional state. The VPA observes the user's behavior in response to the synthesized output and then makes various modifications based on the observed behavior to improve the effectiveness of future dialogue with the user.
