Surround sound playback based on room acoustics

A method performed by an audio system within a room including a first loudspeaker having a first beamforming arrangement and a second loudspeaker having a second beamforming arrangement. The method creates a sound program in the form of several input audio channels. The method executes a beamforming algorithm based on the input audio channels to cause each of the assemblies to generate a front beam pattern and a side beam pattern when the speakers are near an object in the room, with the front beam patterns away from the object and the lateral beam patterns are directed towards the object and the beam patterns contain different components of the sound program. The method executes a cross-talk cancellation (XTC) algorithm based on a subset of the input audio channels to generate multiple XTC output signals to drive the assemblies when the speakers are far from the object.
