Methods are provided for assessing the risk of a drug hypersensitivity reaction induced by the antibiotic sulfamethoxazole and/or trimethoprim. Drug hypersensitivity reactions include rash maculopapular, fixed drug breakthrough, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, eosinophilia, and drug rash with systemic symptoms. Certain HLA genotypes are associated with drug hypersensitivity reactions induced by the antibiotics sulfamethoxazole and/or trimethoprim.
