The present invention relates to a coagulant of natural origin for treating water and aqueous effluent comprising: 20% to 50% solids on a dry basis, viscosity measured using a no. 4 Ford cup of at least 200 seconds, pH in the 1.5 to 3 range, and high molecular mass, in which the coagulant of natural origin contains no aldehyde. The invention also discloses a two-step method for preparing a coagulant of natural origin, a reaction between tannin and polyamine, followed by the addition of aldehyde.
