An embodiment of the present invention discloses a method and apparatus for generating a virtual avatar. A specific embodiment of the method includes: obtaining a first avatar, and determining an expression parameter of the first avatar, wherein the expression parameter of the first avatar includes at least one expression parameter of five senses; and determining, based on the facial expression parameter of at least one of the five senses, a target virtual avatar that is related to the attribute of the first avatar and has the facial expression of the first avatar. According to an embodiment of the present invention, by generating an expression parameter using the first avatar, a target virtual avatar corresponding to both the attribute and the expression of the first avatar can be effectively and more accurately generated based on the expression parameter.
