A vehicle control system is provided that implements a voice control system that enables a voice-based conversation with a driver to enable the driver or autonomous vehicle to control certain operational aspects of the autonomous vehicle. The vehicle control system may use environmental and sensor inputs to select optimal routes for operating the vehicle in autonomous mode or to select a preferred operating mode. The occupants of the autonomous vehicle can change destinations, routes or driving modes using the vehicle control system in conversations activated by the voice control system.
