A method for removing a rhodium or rhodium alloy coating from an electrically conductive substrate comprising the following successive steps: a) providing an electrochemical system comprising a positive electrode and a negative electrode connected to a potentiostat or to a galvanostat, l positive electrode comprising an electrically conductive substrate covered by a coating of rhodium or a rhodium alloy, b) immersion of the electrochemical system in an ionic liquid solution comprising a mixture of a first ionic liquid and a second ionic liquid, c) application of a voltage or current to one of the two positive and negative electrodes, so as to simultaneously: - electro-dissolve the coating of the positive electrode, whereby the surface of the substrate covered by the coating is exposed , and- electro-polishing the surface of the substrate uncovered during the electro-dissolution.
