A method and a mounting machine (100) for mounting component carriers (380A, 380B) are described. The method comprises (a) introducing a first component carrier (380A) into a placement area of a placement machine (100); (b) measuring the position of a marking (382A) which is formed on the first component carrier (380A); (c) equipping the first component carrier (380A) with a first plurality of components (190, 390a) at predetermined equipping positions, the equipping positions in each case being relative positions in relation to the measured position of the marking (382A); (d) measuring, for at least one selected component (390a) of the first plurality of components (190, 390a), an actual relative position in relation to the measured position; (e) determining, for the at least one selected component (390a) of the first plurality of components (190, 390a), an offset (384) between the actual relative position and an associated target relative position, based on which the selected component in question ( 390a) has been populated; (f) removing the component carrier (380A) from the placement area; (g) introducing a second component carrier (380B) into the placement area; and (h) populating the second component carrier (380B) with a second plurality of further components at further predetermined mounting positions; wherein the further predetermined placement positions depend on the determined offset (384).
