Method and apparatus for capturing an image of at least one object appearing in a field of view (FOV). A housing has an image sensor and an autofocus lens assembly that is fixedly mounted relative thereto. The auto focus lens assembly uses multiple lens groups and a liquid lens. The lens groups, liquid lens, and image sensor are aligned so that light received within the FOV passes through the lens groups and liquid lens and impinges on the image sensor. The image sensor generates an electrical signal that is indicative of the received image.
