PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a biotechnological process for the production of ω-functionalized carboxylic acids and esters thereof.SOLUTION: A microbial cell for producing at least one omega-functionalized carboxylic acid ester from at least one alkane is genetically altered to increase, compared to its wild type, the expression of an enzyme that converts alkane to 1-alkanol, an enzyme that converts 1-alkanol to 1-alkanal, an enzyme that converts 1-alkanal to an alkanoic acid, an enzyme that converts alkanoic acid to alkanoic acid ester, and an enzyme that converts alkanoic acid ester to omega-hydroxy-alkanoic acid ester. Here, the microbial cell does not contain any genetic engineering modification for increasing, compared to its wild type, the expression of at least one enzyme selected from the group consisting of acyl-ACP thioesterase, acyl-CoA thioesterase, acyl-CoA:ACP acyltransferase, polyketide synthase, and hexanoic acid synthase.SELECTED DRAWING: None
